Reuse and Renovate
Location: Scarborough, Maine

We began working with Second Parish when they were worshiping in their downtown Portland space, several years before the completion of this project. They owned a stand-alone structure in Portland’s West End district. We performed a feasibility study with design options to ultimately determine they would not be able to meet their needs through a renovation and recommended they search for land to build a new building or find an existing one to renovate.

They found an existing church in Scarborough where we undertook a comprehensive renovation to meet their needs. We brought in Wright Ryan for preconstruction services to assess the existing building and price out various design schemes we developed with the church to renovate and/or expand the space for their needs. After attempting to expand the building to accommodate growth and finding the cost prohibitive, we ended up capturing additional space through creative space planning that allowed us to increase seating in both the sanctuary and the fellowship hall. In addition to the layout changes, the scope included new systems and finishes inside and out with a new entry porch and increased accessibility,

Project Spotlight

Design is often the creation of something new in response to specific design goals. Because of the renovation scope and the conservative budget, our most rigorous design role for this project was that of editor, where we reconceived the existing layout and building form to use as much of the existing, but rework it to feel fresh and utilize space in ways that were previously untapped.
