The project originated from a very common request in Maine: “We'd like a garage added onto our house.”
The design challange with this simple request is not to overwhelm the scale and charm of the house. Thus far, the strategy has been to pull the two-story garage away from the house, give it a form reminiscent of the house, but distinctive, and connect only the first level. In this gap, the new design offers a needed front entrance to the house, a generous mud room and a protected roof deck off the new second story. This project did not proceed past this proposal as the owners decided to move forward with a design of their own.
